UM College of Education Receives “A+” Grades for Elementary Teacher Prep

MISSOULA – The 91Ԫ Phyllis J. Washington College of Education received exemplary grades for the preparation of future elementary school teachers.

The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), an education policy organization that grades colleges on how well they prepare future elementary school teachers based on various factors, provided the at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

NCTQ issued the grades after thoroughly reviewing the syllabi and course descriptions for several of the College’s mathematics and reading classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

“The 91Ԫ stands out both for its sustained high grade in our math standard from our last release in 2022 to now and for its ability to earn high marks on both our math and reading standards,” said NCTQ’s Chief of Teacher Preparation, Ron Noble, via email.

Teacher preparation programs are reviewed by NCTQ against seven research-based standards to estimate the effectiveness and impact of the college’s programs.

“This shows our commitment to making sure we put exceptionally well-prepared teachers in front of all students,” said Dr. Mike Perry, associate dean of the UM College of Education.

A recent recognized the 91Ԫ as one of the few institutions to receive top marks in both undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation from NCTQ.

In the article, Dean Dan Lee highlights the strength of our mathematics program, emphasizing its success in preparing future educators—especially those serving in rural communities.

"UM's undergraduate and graduate programs are among the best in the nation for devoting sufficient time to math pedagogy and the four math content areas," said Noble via email.
